TRLN: Beyond Print
Charleston Presentation
Friday, November 4, 2011, 5:45 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Presentation Title: Consortial e-book acquisitions:
librarian/publisher/vendor perspectives
Abstract:
The Triangle Research Libraries Network received funding from the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation to develop new business models and licensing terms for the
collaborative purchasing and sharing of e-books. Libraries in TRLN are committed
to honoring long-standing cooperative collection agreements, built over time in
print, in the e-universe, and to maintaining their strong record of minimal
duplication. In this highly interactive session, speakers will present the
results of an "e-book summit" held in August 2011 in which library consortia
will meet with e-book publishers and vendors to close the gap on what libraries
need and what publishers are presently offering. Come join this conversation
around the building of new, mutually sustainable models for cooperative
collection development with e-books – including discussions of use metrics,
resource sharing, rights, and selection options. Audience members will be
invited to comment on the proposed new models with a particular emphasis on
whether they could work in their own institutions and collaborative networks.
The objective of the session is incorporate feedback from the Charleston
Conference community in order to advance emerging new practices for the academic
library's acquisition of e-books.
