The Digital collections Metadata Task Group will provide updates and reports to the Technology Council.

Charge: to conduct a pilot project to evaluate the implications of indexing item level digital collections metadata in the TRLN Endeca indexes. In the pilot project, metadata from several digital collections will be harvested and indexed on the TRLN development server alongside metadata for published materials.

Responsibilities

  1. Identify a representative sample of Digital Collections metadata for the pilot.

  2. Create cross-walks from Dublin Core to Endeca properties (fields) and dimensions (facets) using the existing Endeca data model as a guide.

  3. Make recommendations regarding search and display of Digital Collections metadata in Search TRLN.

  4. Coordinate the creation of necessary OAI harvesting routines, data transformation tasks, and interface enhancements with the Endeca Operations Committee or other technical staff on the campuses as needed.

  5. Work with Endeca Operations Committee members, local usability contacts, and Special Collections staff to evaluate the indexing and display of digital collections metadata in Search TRLN and its impact on searching for published materials.

  6. Report to the Technology Council on the implications of indexing Digital Collections metadata on the production Endeca system.

Task group members have the responsibility to consult with appropriate staff at all of the libraries at their institution regarding project planning and evaluation.

Timeline: Fall 2010
A face-to-face kickoff meeting will be held to initiate this project. TRLN will provide wiki space and a project listserv to support communications among task group members. Conference calls and face-to-face meetings may be arranged as needed.
