A Needle in
a Haystack: What is Bibliographic Control and Why is it Important to
Users?
Karen Letarte, Assistant Head of Cataloging, NCSU Libraries
In this session, attendees will learn how access to the
materials we purchase for our users is created. The presentation will
describe what we mean by "bibliographic control" and how it is created,
from pre-publication to a bibliographic record in a catalog. This
includes:
- how the metadata for a publication becomes a
bibliographic record
- record and data sources
- who performs these tasks, and
- what this means for the user

iPods,
E-Learning and Libraries
Lynne O'Brien, Director of Academic Technology and Instructional
Services for the Duke University LibrariesIn
August 2004, Duke distributed iPod devices to more than 1,600 incoming
first-year students. The presentation will describe how iPods were used in
academic courses and student life, share what was learned from the
assessment of the academic use of iPods, and discuss how the growing use
of digital audio creates new possibilities and new issues for libraries.
Lynne also will describe how the Duke iPod experiment last year evolved
into a broader Duke Digital Initiative for the 2005-06 academic year.
