Preservation programs in libraries have always been concerned with more than repairing paper and mending books. However, in the past decade, there has been an exponential increase in the number of digital materials, and all these materials come with preservation needs. Jamie Bradway, NCSU Libraries' Preservation Librarian, will discuss the components of a well rounded preservation program in an academic library, how preservation supports the libraries' mission, and the practical implications of evolving to support digital initiatives.

Increasingly, materials with historic importance to Universities are being created in electronic formats, and historical materials are being digitized for preservation or presentation purposes. Attempting to meet the unique needs presented by these practices, libraries and archives are developing digital repositories. Russell Koonts, Director and Archivist at the Duke Medical Center Archive will lead a tour of two of the more popular repository architectures, DSpace and Fedora, and will discuss pros and cons of each application.
