Community Building in and out of Libraries
Zine Workshops
Kelly Wooten, a librarian for the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's
History and Culture at Duke University, will speak about her experiences
conducting zine workshops for girls at Girls Rock NC's summer camp
programs as a way to share women's history with a younger audience and
engage young people in making history themselves.

Community Service Committee Activities
Karen Ciccone, Laura Abraham
Recognizing the many community, organizational, and personal benefits of
community service, the NCSU Libraries Community Service Committee was
formed to provide group volunteering opportunities for library staff.
Library volunteers have 'flash mob cataloged' non-profit book collections
and have volunteered with organizations including The Coalition to Unchain
Dogs, The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and the Food Bank of
Central & Eastern North Carolina. Abraham and Ciccone will discuss the
committee's formation, the volunteer events the committee has sponsored,
and lessons learned along the way.

Building a Block for Habitat: The Library Community Experience
Liz Garner, John Loy, Alison Murray
With a record number of university and UNC Hospital employees requesting
Habitat housing, the UNC student chapter of Habitat for Humanity,
partnering with Habitat of Orange County, embarked on a project to build
10 Habitat houses for 10 UNC employees and their families. To succeed in
their Build a Block endeavor, the student Habitat group reached out to
various groups across the university to champion these houses by pledging
to provide labor hours and funding. Members of the Library Community Build
a Block Task Force will discuss their efforts and experiences in being a
Build a Block Champion over the last year.

NCCU's Habitat Project
Vickie Spencer will
describe how NCCU partners with Habitat for Humanity. Tijuanda
Farrington, the second recipient of the "Eagle Habitat for Humanity House"
will talk about her experience promoting NCCU and the library to the
community at large. |

Highlighting our Special Collections
A variety of special collections available at the TRLN libraries will
be highlighted in this session.
Processing Architectural Drawings
Emily Walters leads the NCSU Libraries' CLIR Hidden Collections
Processing grant to process 6 modernist architecture and landscape
architecture collections containing over 40,000 original plans and
drawings in both paper and electronic formats. Architectural records,
being both documentation of professional activity and artistic
artifacts, are critical to understanding the environment in which people
live, work and define their community. She will discuss cost analysis
findings, the ways in which processing practices have been streamlined
and the overall goals of the project.

AdViews
Jacqueline Reid, director for the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising
and Marketing History at Duke University, will speak about one of the
Center's latest web projects: AdViews, a database of over 8,800 television
commercials dating from the 1950s to early 1990s. Ms. Reid will describe
the collection, show a few highlights, and detail the process of creating
the AdViews database. presentation

Post Cards
From privies to homes of the privileged, silos to the silvery sands of the
N.C. coast, the North Carolina Postcards online collection features more
than 8,000 Tar Heel-themed cards. John Blythe discusses the birth and
development of this rich storehouse of North Carolina images. His talk
will include a look at the history of postcards and the North Carolina
Collection's entry into deltiology.
